He cannot laugh, big man so small.
The voices took him towards the fall.
He is a man, of rage and hate,
burdened with circumstances of his fate.

With broom in hand, his eyes loom dark,
he waits from others for some sly remark.
As always, though, they turn away.
He’s not worth the word’s they’d like to say.

Hope brings barren, enclosed walls,
in a home of darkness he lurks the halls.
He does not smile, does not frown;
he’s known as simple in this new town.

He walks the street, remembering alone
when once this earth was a better home.
The wife and child who died that day
brought joy to his soul, then were taken away.

Many days at dawn’s first cry
he’s gone to join them, tried to die.
Yet, as the light grows bright and real
he remembers how he’s forgotten to feel.

He stops each day to buy his beer,
tells himself it’s a livable year.
He hasn’t pictured his wife’s shattered smile;
images of his small boy have been dimmed for a while.

The day of the fire, he’d been away,
forgiving his wife, planning what he would say.
I know you were mad, you didn’t mean to yell,
he’d laugh, hold her hand, say "I love you like hell"

They fought now and then, but always held fast,
his family now lost in the looking glass.
What would he give for one more day?
He shrugged, chugged the beer, till the past went away.

my only goal
is just to "be"

Severn,

Thank you so much for the response. I am glad you liked it. Thanks for reading.

Kethry,

I appreciate your comment and that you read it twice. I am glad it made some sense. I did think it was a bit confusing when I read it myself... thanks again.
