In the Breeze

I look off into the distance,
up unto the sky
to one of the tallest coconut trees
I can see in front of me,
and even though the tradewinds
are blowing immensely in the breeze
I see some black birds
resting on the palm fronds
and seeming to enjoy the ride
like cowboys at a rodeo,
riding the back of a determined bull
that wants to buck the bull rider off
and be done with the aggravation,
yet within the movement of those palm fronds
the birds seem to be in control
of their destiny.

Hey! Hey! Hang in there you black birds . . . You have the grit . . . Do what you do best . . . Aggravate those palm fronds.

Your observance of the birds 'riding' the palms as "cowboys" riding a "bull" was succinctly put James. I really liked your poetry. Now, I wonder if you've ever watched a bull rider and thought of Blackbirds on a "Palm frond"? Hmm.

P.S There's a relevance in your quote that any bull rider is sure to appreciate.

Just out looking for the real me...

Ride 'em cowbirds!  Enjoyed your poem, James.  Reminds me of the time that I rode 2 oxen (not at the same time!) in an ox-riding competition in my first year of teaching.

I really like how you compared the birds riding the wind-blown fronds to a cowboy on a bucking bull. Neat take on that!
