I built an impenetrable fortress
around my soul, I thought,
but it lies in defenseless rubble
with not one battle fought.

My blueprints showed it impervious
to impending emotional drought,
designed to stand, invulnerably,
any attack without.

Although my heart was empty,
with myself I made a pact;
it would be safe within my walls
and would remain intact.

The strategy was flawless.
What possibly could go wrong?
The walls buttressed me securely
against a foe less strong.

Wary, and in readiness,
the siege I did await,
but only you, my trusted friend,
entered by the gate.

Laden with a treasure,
you tempted my heart's desire,
laid in its empty coffers
the gift of emerald fire.

Basking there, warmed by the glow,
I heard a gentle song
crumble all of the defenses
I had built so long.

Irony deftly wielded her blow
and without slightest remorse
laid claim to easy victory
from out a Trojan horse.

For I, who tended diligently
my arsenal all the while,
and underestimated the power of love,
am slain...by a smile.
