A Turn At Bat

It was a battery car, with it's last-chance DC charge
winding off of it in a 'to be pitied' metallic whine
You can watch the pro's only so long
Then it's your turn to bat.
Whatever you left on that field
has to be scrapped up, grain by grain,
until you have enough to play with
Raise!  No, call. . .
pierce him pupil-to-pupil
not teacher-to-student
Make him pitch to you
It comes down to this:whether you believe
that your stuff is better than his stuff
Like someone passing their hand over your face
without warning
whoever flinches: loses
You let the first pitch go in
a centered bullet
You get a hunk of the second; let him know you're serious
It had too much junk on it to hit square anyway
The third pitch is the best he’s got
He needs to show you up – and you know what’s coming

Some kid, there’s always some hound afterwards,
wants you to autograph that same bruised ball for him
He was in the parking lot listening to the radio
when the ball bounced off his hood

For a moment, you’re annoyed by the request
then you remember
what Thanks and Thankful means
You sign that damn ball
smiling
all the way

~~~
On the eve of a potential strike, where is
the conscience in the hearts of owners and
players?  Have they lost touch with the reason
they are there?  Find the strength, both parties,
to just say: NO! to a strike.  Greed has its own reward.
all it will do is  raise the price of the game making it impossible for the "average American family" to see the game together...
and believe me they make more than enough money and if they can't handle their affairs it's their fault not the publics.
ggeeezz you brought out the angst in me..I can't even afford those  partial season passes anymore.
hugssss to you jkf
Maybe the public ought to go on strike...
do you think a boycott is in order here, Jeff?
A very well written and meaningful piece.
Like this one a lot, Jeff..
Hopefully, the fans will have a better response this time. Last time they stayed away for a bit but went right back....I'd like to see them strike for a long time...and this is from a man who had had baseball as a very important of his life for many years. The owners think they are bigger than baseball, the players think they are bigger than baseball.....the fans ARE baseball. Baseball is not what it was when it deserved to be called America's pasttime...and that is very sad.
(big hugggsssss) Oh Jeff, this too disappoints me greatly, back in the old days baseball was all about having fun and giving something to our children and ultimately, fun for everyone. Now it has turned into a corporate business frenzy filled with selfishness and frustration! (sad sigh) I have never really been a big fan of MLB at all and the big reason is because though I love how the game was originally played, the whole concept is now foreign! (sigh) This is very well-said, sweet friend, I love it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Jeff, thank you for sharing!
May love and light always shine upon you!
Love,
