Turned out neither of us ate.

Lacey was having a hard time looking at me
And when she did, it was as if she were 6 years old
But had lived them a thousand times only to be caught
Telling her Grandmother she Hated her
When she really didn’t.

I understood well enough what she felt
And could only hope the nut twisted feeling
I had in my gut wasn’t bleeding out my own eyes.

“Travis,” she finally spoke
“would you understand at all if I told you I wasn’t sure?”

I looked at the floor and focused on the head of a nail
Someone had driven in one of the floorboards to stop a squeak
Or to patch some damage that had been done long ago
Making a new board necessary.

“Lacey, I guess I have to, or move on, and of late I’m not sure
where else I would go.” I said trying to keep the beg out of my voice
and the blood pumping well enough in me heart not to be pale.

“Tell you what, Lacey, “ I went on as I stared at that nail head
and fighting the urge my feet had to walk.

“I saw a place on the way down here for rent, let me go see what they want for it.”

“Figure if I run this time I have no chance, but if I stay I might.”

She just nodded
With tear trickles down her cheek
And mumbled “ok”

I walked over to her and kissed her forehead
Then headed for the front door, but stopped
And rested both hands on the frame of the door

“Lacey, I think I could love you, but we both know we don’t know that either.”

The place cost 750 a month
And is about 8 miles from Lacey’s
But the distance between here and there
Measures better in fears

(big hugggsssssss) It too feels like 2,000 miles away when there is so much fear in the picture, it sounds like such an excruciating journey! (sad sigh) I agree she doesn't know what she is missing, this is a powerful counter-emotional response, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ron, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Perhaps it is not love, but it is a whole lot more than  like....

a wonderful beginning, a mini-commitment when laying down even temporary roots....an act of faith and hope in the most charming of ways....
as he comes to terms with his past pain and acknowledges fear of being hurt again....and being able to withstand such....and fear of hurting her, for what if he can't love another...but, then what if he can...interesting to find out...

love this story...and his character...

not clear if she is unsure only about him, or about him and Davis...

enjoying, Pat

I'm so lost (but love it), I feel like I've walked into the middle of something I shouldn't be staring at!     Happily reading along...

Ron....keep writing!!! LOL  I should curl up with a novel, but my laptop works just fine!

Nicole, my recommendation is that you go into the archives and find every bit of Lacey you can and read, read, read!!!!!!
you will love every word of it.

I just love these little vignettes -- still think you should make a book of 'em!

And that measure is a lot harder to conquer than mere miles. *S*

This is wonderful, Cap'n!
