Cautiously parting the thick stalks of grass
we made our way across the opening, stopping
only to wipe sweat beads from our brow, we moved
painstakingly so as not to give our position away.

I was the first to spy the it, hiding in the undergrowth, and I
pointed it out to my partner. What is it? he asked. Having never
seen one before, he was quite amazed. I had encountered
one or two before, but never one of this magnitude.

The creature was now aware of our presence so
we held very still.  I told my partner that his forefeet poised
in the air meant he was ready to attack.  Just as a warrior would,
whichever way we tried to move, warily he countered.

At this point my partner had more questions than I had answers,
where are his eyes?is he looking at me?do you think he likes trucks?
does he like me?can he talk?what does he eat?do you think he wants
to be my friend?…so when our stomachs started to growl
I took my reluctant explorer inside for peanut butter and jelly.

We continued our quest later that same day, but the creature,
newly dubbed "Mantisaurus", was nowhere to be found.  Luckily
for me my partner had an explanation that I was happy to confirm.
He said with all the authority possessed by a 4 year old…who had
previously been made to go inside against his better judgment…
I think the Mantisaurus left because he was crying for me….

Author's note: despite repeated explanations of how and why
the insect got his proper name, as seen through the eyes of
an extremely inquisitive explorer, a baby praying mantis,
no bigger than an inch, was given the very impressive name of
Mantisaurus.

thanks   I know these are more stories than poems, but I write them, so that they will forever be captured...you know how us old people tend to forget

Well writing them is always a wonderful way to share them and preserve them..
Story poems always intrigue me..in part I guess because I would love to be adept at writing them...

lol........me too...it is something I have just tried lately....the one about Country songs was my first...I wrote it first in my usual freestyle...and then in want of something different and more striking, I took out all the line breaks and reformatted the whole thing...so nothing special there...you just gotta have a good subject, and my little one fills me with inspiration

hope you two don't mind the interruption, but i thoroughly enjoyed this, I was certain it was a mantis just before the pb and j episode, but I like your 4 yr old didn't want to go in, I wanted to know if I was right

I will say that there was wonderful suspense right up unitl I thought I knew and a tiny bit of suspense after that until you confirmed.

Really liked your narrative poem, lots!

I love this, lady... You're stretching your styles with great grace and had me peeking over your shoulder to see this fierce critter you'd discovered. *G* Thanks for sharing your adventures... the smiles are greatly appreciated. *S*

Since I am a descendant of Merriwether Lewis I had to read this.  Not what I thought it would be yet I enjoyed it tremendously.
