Listening to every heart

sunfish

you ~ 6 foot thin
me ~ four and something tall
don’t recall
type of reel and
creel, not the best
but we made do
and we were
good at
that

we two

you ~ daddy long legs
me ~ striding along
boardwalk
walking, our
Pismo was fine
salty brine
sprayed rainbows
you gave me
the gold
in my
hair

oh me

you taught
more than
most, you never
went without an
answer, even if
you made it up
in crinkles of
laughter

after
we tried
to fish the day
away on the
boardwalk
eating more
cheese than
the balls intended
to be suspended
on the line

knowing salt~water~taffy
would stretch our fare

sunfish
played us

if it is
possible
for dad thoughts
to travel to
marine life, Dr. Doolittle
you were
the sunfish
jerked and
teased, taunted
and squeezed me
into grins of
“dad, dad!”
your greater grin
spinned my heart
as the reel whined out
your brown
hands covered
my pinkening
ones

water magnifying
size of silvering
scales, fish eyes
that held my
gaze, I think now for a moment
you wondered if…

then

bringing
back the sun
fish to a frypan’s
destiny

you said
“yes” to my
question of
its intended
fare

seven years
later when
doing an
annual clean
I found it in
the freezer and
decided

it was time for
me to grow
up

funny how
memories stay
fresh
