there is a house

There is a house I know
on grassy hill beside the wood
where I was young and life was green
and then when I was in between
the boy, the man,
and then the man still young and lean
and then the middle one, young still.

I climb the hill.
I open door.

The days were long along this hall,
ceiling, floor, two walls.
Behind each door are four.
I remember more.

When I was someone else
it seems to me there were others here.
This chair was where my father read,
now retired and living somewhere far.
This stove was where my mother worked,
searching for the salt, a pan, a jar.
This bowl was where the dog was fed,
now long dead, buried in the yard.
This stair I took each night to bed.
Yes, I remember.

This door is closed.
This door is closed.
This room is empty.
This room is empty.
This room is rank with dust.
This floor is dirt.
This wall is hard.
This thing...
was something once.

I remember there across the drive
is where I once played ball,
bleaching my brown hair blond
in the summer sun,
where stands now another house.

And in the yard, I remember
a tree stood here,
a garden there, and there a shed.
Someone, someone stood here
raking leaves, mowing grass.
Someone threw a ball, caught a pass.
Something bright moved overhead.

And in the woods, long walks to things
sand pits, tree forts, corn fields,
barns, ridge, copse,
meadow, and trail
gone, gone, gone
where now stands progress.
No path there.

I remember floor and hall,
door and stair,
ceiling, wall,
a dog, a ball,
a yard, a tree,
a garden there,
and here a chair.

I remember all.

Interesting...I always wanted to go back to the house where I lived as a young boy in Louisville, Kentucky and check it out...had two opportunities but didn't take them...maybe someday...its right across the street from Churchill Downs...James

Thank you.  You are a long way from home; I've never been there.  I may return to look whenever I wish.

CrEaTuRe: thank you.  But actually, I'm not all that anxious to return.  There's nothing to go back to.
