           SMALL TREES

The snow was deep on the mountains, only by trail could we go,
It was Dec. 1951, by now I had had, my fill of snow.
Down the ridge we went, another patrol, at least it wasn't at night,
The Corps, in its wisdom, had sent us out to see if we could find a fight.

That had never been a problem, it wouldn't be different today,
But when your in the Corps, you don't ask, just do, besides, I had no say.
Now I don't recall who had that patrol, probably Sgt. Madrid,
All I do know, is those gooks were right on us, they watched ever thing we did.

We were drawing fire from the time we left our lines, all the way to the valley below,
Bill White sat down beside me, and as we lit a smoke, a string of bullets carressed the snow.
Well now we had our fight, but the Sgt. said back up the hill,no problem for me,
The fire was coming from a concealed position, where, no one could see.
By now we were getting mortor fire along with small arms, things were getting hot,
The next move by me, proved that, a rocket scientist, I was not.
I had thought the Sgt. was dumb, for exposing us that way,
But it turned out he wasn't the only fool on that
hill this day.

As the fire increased around me, I begin to look for cover in all that snow,
There were trees out there that looked good to me,
so I decided to go.
Off that trail I went, headed for a tree, waist deep snow, and a tree smaller than me.
They gave me no cover, the others are up over the hill, and I'm all those gooks can see.

Fear is a wonderful thing, it gives you a reason to go on,
And that machine gunner had me hung out, all alone.
Bark flew from the trees, he shot holes in my clothes, I knew I was going to die,
Most time when in a bind, I'd pray, I didn't, and to this day I don't know why.

I finally made it up and over the top of that hill,
I'll never know how,
That man had to be the worst shot in Korea, else I wouldn't be here now.
I know God was with me that day, or I would never made it out alive,
That was only one day of many, worse things happened
to me, but in spite of it all, I did survive.

I may offend some people with the term "gooks" but if you'd been there it wouldn't.

Hey Bill

Fear is a wonderful thing,it gives you reason to go on.

That is a great line, you have condensed everything into that statement.

Here you speak for many 'veterans'across the world.

I enjoyed your piece

I liked this a lot Bill. Good thing I don't know what "gooks" means.

Bill,

I think your descriptions of war are very vivid and paint a good picture for us all.  Our veterans are the reason we have the freedom we do now and have all of you to thank for that.

this was an awesome piece.  (mainly because it is non-fiction i think) but it is awesome.  and i don't think the word "gook" shoudl be taken offensively used in the context that it is in and considering poetic license.  but anyways, keep up th good work.

Thanks rich-pa, yes it is a true story, one of the dumbest things I ever did, but god protects fools. The term gook, We who were there call them that, I guess it is all from what ever your perspective is, mabe if your doing business with them, they are one thing, but if they are trying to kill you, their a gook, I am sorry, I lost members of my family, friends I would die for, that I still see today, I haven't forgotten, Not even a little bit, Pearl Harbor is still fresh in my mind, I feel that to many have forgotten to much, To much money involved .... Well at least you folks have a little more insight to my make up...bill

Bill - Format??  What's that??     You write from the heart, speaking of things that some of us know little about.  And when you write of these things I come away with more knowledge and understanding. Thank you for that. < !signature-->
