Night Dragons

Dashing away in the claws of a drake
Soaring above the clouds, ne'er to wake
I fell into the comfort of my winged snake
So much love that until he returned, I ache

"I've never been so free!" I cried, hurrying to his embrace
Ripping free of a life tinged with bars and lace
He gazed at me close, whispering: "For anything, I'd do, just to see your grace."
So much he did, I forgot the chase

Flying high, in air, love, freedom, with bountless joy
Gliding through dreams, their wisdom upon this tale
How I wish to be as eternal as a night dragon
Ne'er to be stopped beneath sorrow's gale

Days passed quickly in happiness' flight
Casting upon us a shadow shattering our one last night
When the knight came to return me from this height
Claiming to save me from Death's bite.

"Princess, he's a beast, an animal unfit for life."
I replied: "My dragon, sir, shall overcome discrimination's strife."
But there, before my eyes, my wyrm died beneath hate's knife.
And I was taken away, saved, given to him as a wife.

Dying away, hopeless, lost beneath hatred's cut
The drakes fell as their wings' majesty broke
Fading into dreams of a fairy tale told
Mates disappearing in loneliness: heartbroke

Drakes of old, tell their tale true
Of how once their graceful wonders lifted dreamers and flew
But of Jealousy's corruption, their magic: undo
As heroic warriors came into nests and slew.

Night above, carrying stars to wish upon wings
Given to lovers many: hope, romance and blessings
Rustling inside, untold ancient feelings
The web of fate catching us all in cut strings

Flying free over land; under, over sky
Dancing with scales reflecting rainbows
Long since gone with evening's setting sun
Gliding so free above, I watch night dragons

Into romance's tale of knights saving princesses
From the claws of fierce dragons
Marrying her for beauty, love and lust
I cannot foresee the pain held by the loss of that race

Sifting, whispering, inspiring new
Night dragons wander into dreamers dreaming
Casting upon them a tale of old and magic
Memories held dear in innocence real

Let me tell you 'nother tale's sorrow
Of Night's inspiring depth and wishing
And the drakes' soaring wisdom of freedom
One thing can I say now:

"We all need our night dragons."

Okay, okay, so it doesn't make sense...

~Astraea

"Sometimes stars can only be seen in darkness."

"Sorrow's crown of sorrow is remembering happier things."

What do you mean, it doesn't make sense?! It makes more sense to me than sense itself! This is truly a beautiful piece, Astraea...I like it so much I printed it out and hung it on my wall...I really think this is great!
It helps that it mentions dragons half the time...lol

Thanks for the great read!
Oh, and I've got another poem for you...
