Listening to every heart

Country Ways of LA

The cowboy did not regret
LA concrete
But yearned
His heart into country ways
Large hands guiding
Little girl skirts
Into tomboy jeans,
Those 50’s seeing tall
Leaning over
Childhood oohs and ahhs

He allowed clambering
Onto shoulders to see
Into trees’ delights

Where songs come from

For we cannot be full flighted
Until we earn our wings

His teachings of birds
And bees were to observe
Up close
And personal and had
Nothing at all to do with what
You just thought…

So that day when the ooh went
To oh! Daddy! Look! He sharply
Said Stop! Don’t Touch!

LA’s spring warm is summer’s
Kiss to come, and what to do with
This little nest here on
Concrete below its home
With featherless babes
Chirping for mama

He became allknowingwiseandwonderful
In a blink, a towel to
Gently scoop up the small
Home of hunger
A shoebox of comfort to nestle
Them in, for mother
Was long gone, knowing of no
Way to recoup her losses…

The stucco home kitchen now
A birdhospitalsanctuary and he taught
Me words a four year old
Would remember forever…

A glass eyedropper
Became mama, and dug up worms
Were food for more than
Thought…

How does a six foot cowboy
Walking the concrete of LA
Become a mama robin, you ask?

I’m not quite sure,
To this day.

I think it had something to do
With the state of Texas being the
Size of one man’s heart.

Sunshine.
I thought I was going to bed and had to take one more look what might be on pip, and ¡K guess what?
Do birds really come back to the same feeder?  Like to they come to know they will find food, love and saretly there?
Did I sniff Texas in here somewhere?
Sends you armloads of hugs from my heart.
Can I go to bed, now?

Jaime,

I think my father would have liked Texas...except for the braggodocio that some claim; his mind and heart were always as full with the southern comfort so many Texans afford others.

Hope I didn't keep you up too late.

You amazed me with this poem.  It took me back to a summer day and a baby Magpie.  This is a keeper and I know that Kacy is smiling.

Love,
A
