He's all upset and in a frenzy,
he flits and flies, she sits and cries,
for their nest has hit the ground.
Some careless person has chopped a branch,
and the next generation is nowhere to be found.
Oh, I'm so sorry little sparrows,
there's not much else I can say.
But please stay near here for another year
and make another nest in my safe tree.
Next time I'll protect you,
just you wait and see!
Your eggs will hatch
and I will watch
your babies play
until they fly away
to build their own nest.
Just you wait and see!
Stay in nearby tree
and you shall see
your dreams
come true.
I promise
I'll look
after you.

this makes me think of the family of geese we have in a field just around the corner from us, we watched them have babies last season, and they are back!   waiting to see if there are new babies   I liked this very much

Kacy,
It's about dang time you started posting regularly! I know it's hard to keep your priorities straight when you live in the dark. LOL Cute write but sad tale.

SEA, keep watching those beauties. What a wonderful experience, to see the beauty of birth, and the return to the homeland.

Larry, hugs, and thanks. The natural cycle of life and death, rebirth and continuity is so beautiful and refreshing. Yes, 'tis sad when a whole generation gets wiped out, for any reason.

When I was a kid we used to find baby birds every spring that had fallen out of their nests.  We'd try, sometimes with success, taking care of them ourselves.  Thanks for the remembrance, Kacy!

What a moment you've captured with this elegant, well-written poem, Midnitesun. You have such a delightful way of sharing your moment of inspiration from the birds falling from their nest into your heart.

Midnite

You brought back some memories for me too...of a precious time when I was the bird lady, with a whole neonatal unit of shoe boxes and eye droppers.  Loved this poem!  Thank you.

Thanks to each of you for your replies to this poem. It's heartwarming to share something like this with other passionate people, who take the time to care for the littlest creatures.
Martie, LOL at your comment. Neighhbor kids used to call me birdlady or buglady. Once I had a hummingbird in a tiny cage, on bottlebrush tree flowere for nectar. She lasted three days, but only had one wing, so she would never have made it outside. The wounded pigeons were the messiest
As for the bugs? I worked at an insectary, helping rear and sell beneficial insects to homeowners, researchers, horse ranches, and farmers, encouraging nontoxic pest control. Those kids knew a chrysopa carnea from a trichogamma wasp. Entomology is cool.

Ah Kacy, so nice to see you posting!  You must be one busy lady.  This reminded me of my morning dove nest outside my dining room window that I can look right into and watch every year, as they build in the same spot. You know that a morning dove mates for life?  Yup.  But for over 20 years it can't be the same dove nesting in that spot...so I am wondering if the babies grow up and come home to rebuild?  How long does a dove live?  Oh, now I have to go and get my bird book out...  That has puzzled me since the first year.  Good write...one that has stirred up memories for a lot of people.

Nancy, I'll be looking forward to reading about your nestlings this year. Do you think all those birds are from the same family? How exciting, to be able to view them so closely! Hope you are taking photos...or maybe sketching them?

Midnitesun - Very nice.  I remember when I was growing up, my mother would always feed the birds in our yard.  She put out bread in the morning, and when no one was around they all swoop down and grab it.  I think she still does it to this day.

*sigh* thanks for visiting my tree today.

Dave, your mom and I could roost in the same tree. I almost got evicted from an apartment in California for feeding the pigeons and doves. They made me clean up the sidewalk. I didn't care, I cleaned it up all the time anyway, and kept on feeding those feathers.
