Don’t Believe What You Read

From my view I heard a familiar voice,
It was Mr. Softee yelling,
“Get Your Ice-Cream Here!”
His truck moving as if in quicksand
Along the melted, tar-paved street…
And on the East corner I saw Mr. Brown,
Preaching the word of God to himself
But asking for tidings from passerby’s…
Then I heard a shotgun blast on West street
In that boarded up abandoned house,
Causing several young people to scatter,
Like mice escaping fumigated holes…

From this view I can see the alley on 7th street
And see policemen dishing out 100 lashes,
Their Billy clubs now stained black
The same color as my tears
Or is that the rain dropping onto my soul?
Nevertheless, life goes on for some
As I look into the Johnson’s apartment across the street
Watching them eat before the dishes start flying
And the kids start crying,
Until Mr. Johnson slaps his wife and grabs his belt…
Then I heard another dispute in front of my building,
A pimp was scolding this young woman
Or should I say “young girl”, she looked all of fourteen,
Probably a runaway
Nowhere else to go
No money, no food
Right into the hands of this pitiful man…

Oh, before I forget
Have I told you about my view?
And how I can almost touch the sky?
Pretty blues and fluffy whites hold my hands
Swinging me back and forth…
And then I let go
Or they let go
And for a split second I ponder my own life
Is it that much better than what I perceive?
It is all up to God now,
This will either be a dream and I will awake with another chance,
Or you will read in the newspaper headlines tomorrow,
“Young Man Leaps Off of Building, Thought He Could Fly”.

There is always so much more to the story...so much more to the life and the person.  The heart sees clearer, I do believe.

Deep thoughts

reality check snapshots
horrid scenes that happen
unacknowledged, unseen by blinded minds
