There are no swings there,
So they swing themselves through the air,
And they went giggling.

They hadn't balls with them,
Except those they'd imagine;
And they went giggling.

The yard was so tall
They couldn't see beyond at all,
And still went giggling.

I enjoyed this. It seems to me (no offense intended) that you were envious of the children being able to giggle and be happy and positive in the face of adversity - something like Meursault in "L'Étranger" by Albert Camus.  He was forever talking about others smiling and laughing, yet he never once did throughout the book.

Gloom, it sounds to me like they were content
with what they had.

Good writing, Sir.
Hugs,
Ethel
