When midnight comes upon the mountain
Folks pace the floors and lock the doors up tight.
See candles burning in the windows...
'cause Jesse Walker fears the fire light.

When Jesse first came here...folks all started shoutin'
Moved here with his wife and new born son.
She was as white as December's snow capped mountains
Jesse was as black as the barrel of a gun.

Folks gathered in church one Sunday mornin'
They talked of running Jesse from their town.
Late that Sunday night,  they came with torches bright...
and burned Jesse's cabin to the ground.

Jesse dragged his family from the ashes
Then the hound dogs chased him long into the night.
He wife and baby lay where the tall grass is...
high atop a windy hill and out of sight.

Seasons came and went like always...
Talk around the woodstoves used to be...
How fearing for his life, Jesse left his child and wife...
"But that kind aint the same as you and me."

The snows fell heavy on the mountains
and on the hill where Jesse's family lay.
He did not run and hide....  He laid down by their side....
They found him when the snows melted away.

When midnight comes upon the mountain
Folks pace the floors and lock their doors up tight.
See candles burning in the windows...
'Cause Jesse Walker fears the fire light.

Every night...  I hear the dogs all howlin'
to that lonesome whistle from the midnight trains.
Some say..."Its 'ol Jesse...out a'prowlin'"
I say... Guilt can make you think peculiar thangs.

This sounds like a song to me.

Good writing.
Hugs,
Ethel
