Diamonds She'll Never Wear

Tonight I went out and picked up
some Stax records
and diamonds she'll never wear
call her up, tell her I'm coming straight home
tell her I love her
hoping things are all right over there
in the warmth of her soul,
there's this stranger I know
and it takes all my time to get inside
whether rain pours down
or a big sun shining all of the time
I'll be workin', thinkin' about coming home
to my baby
on the upper west side

Stringing gold and silver lights
on a pretty Christmas tree
smiles all around I can remember
hugs n' kisses to the misses, queen of the house
she's the purpose in me
from running through the sprinklers
to walking down the aisle
we've gone together with style
and it takes all my time to remember back
to the snow fallin' down
on her long flowing hair, shiny and black
I was captured in that moment, walking home
saw my baby
walking down railroad tracks

Believing
and trusting that
everything's gonna turn out all right
relieving to know
how far we had to go
to become one at night when we turned out that light
and found our hard-won wonderland there
a land full of Stax records and diamonds she'll never wear

Drivng home tonight, via A.M. radio
playing Stax records
like suits I used to wear
call her up, tell her I'm coming straight home
tell her I need her
can't wait to run my fingers through her hair
in the warmth of my soul,
well I know, I know
it'll take all my time to get back inside
'cause it's cold as hell out here
and a big moon shines like a new dime
I've been workin', dyin' to get back home
to my baby
queen of the upper west side
you know it's true
gonna suprise her with diamonds she'll never wear
and a ruby dress too
gonna find my purpose (yes I am)
the moment I run my fingers through her hair

This has some snazzy snappy rhythms in it, and the happy tone is contagious.

I saw a happy and contented man in my mind's eye and oh that made me smile.

Sounds to me like she already outshines the diamonds.

I agree with Serenity. This poem sings a lovely tune.
