I heard the Lady crying, though I never saw her tears,
Her crying came from deep within, her eyes showed mortal fear.
This Lady in her seventies, once happy - full of life,
Was sitting in her wheelchair - of her happiness deprived.

Her speech was slow and cautious, due to major injuries,
The doctor had to shave her hair because of surgery;
Her left arm in a cast – ignored and useless in her lap,
Her brain not working as it should; she felt life had her trapped.

But suddenly she looked at me and spoke with thoughtful voice,
She said: "I'm so afraid to sleep, I still can hear that noise
Of cracking skull and breaking bones, before my world turned black;
My devastating nightmare of that cowardly attack.

For all I did was going home from visiting a friend,
And why this man chose me that day I'll never comprehend;
But even more I'm hurt and dazed by all the passers-by,
Who watched the man attack me and did nothing but stand by.

Now soon I need to catch a plane – I have to find a way;
New Zealand is where I must go, I cannot stay away.
My only child rests in its soil - I visit every year.
Shall I recuperate in time? That is my deepest fear.”

Exhausted by emotions she withdrew within her shell
Of terror, doubt and fear, which turned her life into a Hell,
A life was taken on the day when madness came along,
I hope the Lady found her strength and pray she proved them wrong!

This poem really happened and I always wondered how this Lady is today. Unfortunately I never saw her again. Thank you for your support.

Hoping she returned safely. A compassionate write.
