As heated oils and blood did stain one’s breath.
a kingdom struggled to remain in place.
Built by hands of those who toiled till death
and stalked the dreaded reaper’s dark cold face.

Their bloods ran pure and true for liberty
from the heights of stone to the ocean nigh.
Arrows flew their deadly arch silently
and trumpets dampened wailful warriors cries.

Were not for those whose hands did lay the stone
upon the ground where once another stood
A strange new Lord might stand, yet be alone
For this was home to gallant men who could.

They rode the night to fight the hated foe
who stood the mound above the raging sea.
Their horses spurred and whipped till blood did flow
as riders rode a trail to destiny.

And when the battle ceased beneath dark skies
and thousands fell upon the hallowed ground.
So many lay with haunting open eyes
to never hear again a trumpet’s sound.

Excellent!  I really enjoy this meter, BJ, and it feels so appropriate for the topic.   ....jo

Incredibly crafted BJ.  Right up my alley as you know.  The imagery was intense.  It was as if I was there watching it all unfold on some desparate field (or any desparate field where the blood of the brave has spilled.  Your poetry is always captivating and inspirational.  Your are gifted, my friend.
