          Rock Paper Pen

I ought to have been a railroad bum,
          I think,
when again I hear a freight passing
          through town, heading west, mostly
          empty.
I might have left on the C&NW or the
Milwaukee Road or any number of other
lines we have since plowed into history and
          nearly forgotten.
The sound of the crossinghorn triggers
          one of those out-of-body memories
          that transports me.
          You know the kind.
This one calls up the unprejudiced
eyes and ears of a not yet young man
          riding on cross-country rails,
          with a ticket.
Such a trip happens only once and
vivid though it was, I followed other
          roads.
Adventure is in my pen now and travels
          cross the page.
I can sit here on this winter chilled
boulder in the warming spring sunshine
and watch the flutter of thin bark,
          tatter-peeling from a paper birch
          younger than me.
I could lay my ink down there, black on
white, and send the papered words
          floating down this Mississippi River.
And maybe you would find them adrift
and read them like the life lines of
          a washed-up bum.
But then I would not see the wind catch
there or hear its rhyme before it
ripples across the lake and is gone.

So many choices, and they may all be the right one.  Enjoyed this much!

Krawdad .......... Trains are special. I sometimes think that I moved just to be near the trains. Wonderful.  Bob
