Why Earth Day Is Every Day

When there is no more clean water on planet earth,
what will you find that is potable to drink?
When no birds are heard singing in the nearby trees
will you remember the acid rain that drenched all the leaves?
Will you wonder what happened to the chain of DNA when you see
the unnaturally curved beak of a crow or black-capped chickadee?
When the flotsam and jetsom come floating in on every wave
and all the fish are floating belly-up in a foul watery grave,
will you wonder how any sentient beings could think
the sea was a never-ending-always-forgiving sink
that would welcome all our pollution and somehow not stink?

If it’s true that we reap what we sow,
then surely each one of us must know
that what we shall inevitably reap
is directly proportionate to how we keep
the checks and balances on our primary account,
how well we manage the resources we spend
upon which life itself does depend.
Holding onto the cheap attitude
that Mother Nature is our personal servant
will leave us spiritually bankrupt and physically destitute
long before terrorists can blow this kingdumb apart.

So what are your personal plans for the environment?
What are you willing to do to guarantee
a vibrant Mother Earth for future generations to see?
What non-renewable resources will you trade away today?
What price is too high to pay?

Once again we are bombarded with political spitting matches
and phony debates about the US economy and jobless rates
while much of the planet collectively hates
the way we spend all the resources while we bombard them with
our own version of WMD...GREED,
as if it was our sovereign right,
as if the world's resources were infinite.
And I’m wondering why John Q Public is not demanding
serious dialogue and honest debate from world leaders
about the fate we all face as inhabitants of a planet
whose stewards are too busy playing Monopoly,
Star Wars, and Trivial Pursuit to face reality.

The sky is falling.

i am with ya too. every day i see the beauty of this world fading away. not only concrete replacing beautiful country, but the disrespect of people leaving their trash along roads and rivers. just breaks my heart. thanks for sharing
