(Be careful, you may find someone you know in this rather undisciplined ramble.)

I know poets
Whose imagination takes them
to romantic places
they’ve never been
Whose age confines them
to the good times
as only they can remember

I know poets
Whose lost dreams propel them
through the same backwaters
in different boats
Whose fantasies are grown
large and sober to fill
the deep holes they must endure

I know poets
Whose windows open to landscapes
never seen before
but recognized by all
Whose visions come vividly
to brighten the everyday grey
we are besieged with

I know poets
Whose consternation with the world
breaks everything except
the lead in the pencil
Whose puzzlement remains secure
guarded by the hiding words
left out

I know poets
Whose honesty is so clear
that even the cracks
in their bones are revealed
Whose fear of the unknown
can steal the paper
from beneath the pen

I know poets
Whose love of words addicts them
to the insatiable thirst
for uttered ink
Whose pain screams on beyond
the spare intelligible words
they leave behind

I know poets
Whose voice is heard only
in the quiet of night and
the dying of shadows
Whose despair is survived
by shedding the daily burden
of back-breaking words

I know poets
Whose love and hate burn equally
bright in the darkened depths
of an ignorance
Whose love-ly words are bait
to the hungry reader
seeking shelter

I know poets
Whose fiction hollows
lines into canyons of words
that do not echo
Whose dishonesty is bolstered
by the odd pride in the view
that “it is only poetry”

I know poets . . .
