"Breathe deeply. Feel the warmth of the sun upon your cheeks." "I can’t," she softly cries, "my lungs are too weak and my skin is stretched too taut over my thin bones." And with that, the nurse sighs, moves away slowly with downcast eyes to the adjoining bed, where another frail patient breathes deeply the final breath of life. AIDS. Too few aides to combat AIDS, partly because too much of the world’s financial aides go for weapons. Some day perhaps we shall overcome... our own shortsightedness. Thanks to each of you for taking amoment to read and reply to this post. While I am not up on the actual stats, it's my understanding that over 40 million people on Earth are HIV positive, and the great majority are in countries too poor to offer everyone a vaccine and basic medical treatment. What does one 'smart' missile cost? one plane? one gun? one vaccine? one day's worth of clean water and food? one case of 'protection' ??? one life? an interesting math link that says a great deal about 'priorities': http://www.deltapartnership.org/math/missiles/img002.gif [This message has been edited by Midnitesun (12-01-2003 09:40 AM).] |
