Chili

It was just
her way, simplifying
adversities, making less,
more

money, scarcer
than hen’s teeth

knowing everyone
would arrive
expecting normal
fare

no one knew
the carburetor had
to be replaced

or the old ‘frig
had given out
to make way for a
new old ‘frig

even the coyote
had eaten
better off the rooster
just yesterday,

still, they would be
coming,

expectant and hungry.

It was not in her
to turn anyone
away

so she did what she did

it was lemonade time

she took inventory
of stock at hand,
silently counting mouths

and for every man
multiplied by two.

“We’re breaking tradition!”
she’d say,

hoping no one really
missed the smell of a big bird
roasting,

nor the niceties that
normally accompanied
white and dark
no red
no black
no green salad
nor baked beans,

but beans of a kind,

and offered up, just chili.

One of the men looked around,
took in the moment,
went and got beer.

It was a feast.

The best Thanksgiving
ever gobbled.

I had a dream last night

I've had that dinner....and served it. A touching poem here, one with memories in it for me. Thank you, Sunshine.

I've often cooked beans, rice and chile rillenos for Thanksgiving and even Christmas, and never heard any complaints
(well, maybe one or two in the bathroom later that night, LOL)

(smiles) Awwwwwwww, it never hurts to break the tradition a little, sweet friend, it's only food and the ideals live in the giving and thanking and sharing! (big hugggsssssss) God Bless You, sweet friend, you've really broken no tradition and only strengthened the holidays importance, yay, I always love eating my turkey mole-style, hehehe, Happy Thanksgiving, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
