They are My Next Summer

It is September
and still the sky is open,
blue with guile,
hiding the knowledge of dark clouds.

It is September,
the month of my birth,
the song of my opening
screeches into the heat on the 22nd,
I feel the sweat of my mother
holding the fall of me under todays sun,
waiting.

Maybe that is why I love that last day of summer,
and the beginning of fall,
like a mother she whispers into the evening
with the cool fingers of the fan and open window.

I am still growing, I tell the old woman
who waits for me around the corner,
still working on incomplete.
Each fall my sunflowers lean across the garden path
and I hold the seeds like babies
in the palm of my hand.
They are my next summer.

You do this to me, over and over:
Every time I read your poems,
Emotions rise
From the visuals found in the words...

Martie . . . God, you write beautifully

still working on incomplete.
Each fall my sunflowers lean across the garden path
and I hold the seeds like babies
in the palm of my hand.

keep planting . . .

Those seeds, and your optimism, will always keep the blue in the next summer...

hugging you for this.

I am still growing, I tell the old woman
who waits for me around the corner,

And every growth spurt reveals still more loveliness. *S* I like this very much, Martie... what beautiful optimism. *S*

In this gentle climate, I've found that if the weather's right and my timing's right, I can plant twice and get a second crop just at the end of the year... I wish that for you too -- flowers in November, a good thing all around!

I like the air of this poem, the connection to the past and your knowledge that the future will be there for you. Beautiful work.
