where the wild flowers grow

Hail to the
virgin mary nightlight.
It got me through those hard times
when sleep just wouldn't come.
For in my father's house,
the floor boards creak on their own.

Dim sound of a train whistle,
trying to scare away stray coyote.
Sneaky, little pesky mosquito,
feasting on my ankle.

So alone
on the bottom bunk,
tracing my fingers along the wooden slats.

Visitation,
tick-tock below my pillow.
Two days, and one night,
an unforbearing need.

Virgin mary nightlight,
lack of sleep.
Lullaby as your footsteps creak.

This reminded me of my own childhood fears, and I also had that nightlight.  I enjoyed this write very much, as you did it well, with suspense....~~V~~
