Between your nationality or your religion;
your God or Country?

Which to you is the higher calling?

Of course I don't think patriotism and piety are always at odds.  But when they are, for those who are serious about God, then the choice is obvious.  It's only when Caesar would demand that which is God's, that the Christian would be required to seem less than the model citizen.  It was only when the Christians refused to say "Caesar is Lord" and throw incense in the fire, that they were scrutinized and persecuted.  Otherwise, they often proved (and were praised) the best of citizens.

Right now? I thank God for having the health and ability to afford a salad for lunch while I prepare my taxes.

Well, my country is where my, my family's, and my countrymen's lives are.  Am I going to put my beliefs above our lives?  Absolutely not.

"Am I going to put my beliefs above our lives? Absolutely not.   "

Then your beliefs aren't very strong. What's the point of having beliefs if you don't back them with your life?

I would choose my beliefs over my country any day. Why do you think America came to be in the first place?

Why don't you let me tell you what MY beliefs are or aren't, instead?  The point of having beliefs is so they serve and help what makes them possible in the first place: life.  Life is more important than faith.  Without it, there is no faith at all.

I wasn't downing your beliefs dude. Huan asked "God or country" so I figured "your beliefs" were in reference to God.

What about martyrs?

I meant when you called my beliefs "not very strong"

"What about martyrs?"

What about the  people they left behind, that could've used their help?

[I meant when you called my beliefs "not very strong"]

That did seem pretty harsh; I apologize. I just figured that any beliefs worth having are worth dying for. Kind of like "anything worth doing is worth doing right." But you're right, I don't know your personal beliefs so I shouldn't label them as if I do. Again, I apologize.

"What about the people they left behind, that could've used their help?"

I believe that having true faith means that nothing is more important. Martyrs died for something they believed in that was stronger than any earthly bond. If a man's life is threatened and he either has to denounce his faith or die; what do you think his family would want? His life be taken? Or his very soul, spirit and core be taken? I guess it's just a personal thing.

God. I love my country, my family, and my friends, but I choose to love him who gives that love and that meaning first. I don't worship idols. Without Him, it all becomes meaningless anyway. And yes, whether or not I'm martyred, I will die one day anyway. Like Mel Gibson said in "Braveheart", we all end up dead. Or like the martyred missionary Jim Eliot said: "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."

The question seems to deal with a choice between different delusions.  Which delusion one embraces seems important to the extent that it impacts others, but this is probably also a delusion.

What we see or feel or think is an illusion.  The codification of illusions results in delusion.

The question in either case becomes "what in the hell were you thinking?"
