Coins

Was it concerning payments
That these fishermen were counselled?
These honest Galileans
Who were as pious as a priest?
Perhaps it was, since in their ranks
The Zealot fire still smouldered
And patriotism’s sterling soul misplaced
Was yet to be released
And shown its native country far
Yet nearer still than breath
Transforming them into willing men
To be dealt, not render, death.
And yet it must have been much more
Than a lakeside Sunday School
Keeping saints in line for keeping
Caesar’s golden rule.
For the image on the coin was said
To denote true ownership
But what shall we render unto God?
Christ’s words, like coins, may flip
And take us to the other side
Or perhaps to our beginning
When his image was all but voided
As our Parents went to sinning
When in the primal waters
Where Leviathan was coiled
In Chaos we were sunken low
With headship lost and soiled
And covered in the sable deep
Where only God can see
Bound in that wayward coin somehow
Was the worth of you and me.
But the seed of the woman found it
And her neighbors were called to come
The prophet’s fish delved deep enough
To collect God’s modest sum
Still thought to be a pittance
And compared to Caesar’s prize
A fleck of tin, yet more than gold
In the master fisher's eyes.
For he hung there casting in the nets
the price of salt and blood
And yet for all his pains, he knew
His purchase would make good
Was it concerning payments
That these fishermen were schooled?
These men devoid of worldly wealth
and as floundering as the waves?
Perhaps it was, since long they knew
That God is due commitment
And even a widow’s mite is loved
By the Christ who truly saves.
