The last glimpse of my son as a child was seen by me today
He cried and sobbed as we buried the family pet.
Hammy was a good hamster, he lived his life so true.
He was alone and found us. He needed a place to stay
He just waddled up to our door last summer one day.
Like he already knew, that we would take him and treat him like a king.
He would play and run on his wheel all throughout the night.
We all grew to love the little albino dwarf.
He would be cuddled and spoiled.
I would sometimes sneak him a peanut or sometimesjust a cashew.
But today as I held my son, and he sobbed “Its Ok mom, we aren’t supposed to have pets anyway”
I realized that there would not be too many more times before my son grew up, that I could hold him tightly and make all the hurting stop.

We are only a pet's caregiver for a time...in a few days your son will find another pet who he will need to care for, so that the new one in your home will be just as cared for, and loved, as Hammy...

I know what you talk about, as I remember our own little hamster and the sadness when he was gone ...this IS a very sad, but also precious experience of life for your son. He learns through his tears ...
The words of your son about "we are not supposed to have pets anyway ..." made me even more sad. Please let him have pets, always. They are healing presences. Your son's sadness just shows how much Hammy meant to him .... and I agree with Sunshine's words.
A beautiful very expressive write.
Love, Margherita
