Blackmailed into writing....ERRRR ... AHHH ....
I MEAN  ...  inspired by ....

Konrad' s Odyssey, II   ( Sunshine) http://piptalk.com/pip/Forum76/HTML/003568.html

Dust Clouds (Capt Ron) http://piptalk.com/pip/Forum76/HTML/003600.html

*for those just coming into this series, Iambe is Ron's character who has often inspired others of us to try to write the intensity between "Travis and her. A ways back, Ron invited poets to create sibling charaters for Iambe. Kari wrote of Konrad, Martie created Dillion, I penned a muse in Jake, and Duncan created a side kick that still needs a name (hint hint)*
---------------------

Hard To Hold

Jake heard Travis's truck drive
off shortly after Konrads.
He hadn't moved from the chair
since absorbing the news of the
death certificate that Konrad had
summoned them all there to read.

He stood and turned, finding
Iambe looking out the window.
She looked more fragile than he
had ever seen her. As he walked over
to her, she spoke in a near whisper.

"I'm worried about Dillon,
she's the one who has lost the
most in all this and is the one to
hurt the deepest."

Dillon was sitting in the porch swing,
barely rocking, singing some song
that ran constantly in her head ...
something she had done since she
was a child, giving voice to harmonies
that only she could hear.

Jake watched her out the window,
"I'll take her home when she's ready."

He wanted to comfort both his
sisters, but one look at Iambe's
shoulders stiffening as he approached
her, told that she wasn't about to stay
fragile for long, her hard shell facade
was now back in place.

He felt no loss in this, after all
that old man had been dead to
him for a long time. And besides,
a cowboy learns early on to wrap
his pride and pain in rawhide and wear
a poker face. But he was worried about
Dillon and her unfinished feelings, things
left unsaid had a way of haunting a soul.

And he worried about Iambe,
unable to forget the look in her eyes
as Travis drove off. When he looked up
Iambe was looking back at him, smiling.
He knew she had just read him like
one of Konrad's poetry books.

"Don't worry Jake, Travis will be back,
we haven't finished this dance yet.
Konrad and Travis have things to work
through, they wont be any good to anyone
until they find the answers."

She walked over to him and they
held each other in a quiet moment
of sibling comfort and respect.

"Cmon, lets take Dillon home and see
if she'll cook us some of her famous eggs."

Dillon laughed through the screen door.

"Only if Iambe promises not to try cooking
and Jake, you're doing the dishes"

The three of them loaded up in Jake's
truck and headed for Dillon's place.
As they pulled on the highway, the
rain came down harder, lightening
flashed across the dusking horizon.

For a while they rode without talking,
each alone with their thoughts ...
till Dillon softly sang them home.
The rain and the windshield wipers
both fell silent, as if knowing they
couldn't hope to harmonize.

Iambe shed silent tears and
wondered which direction Travis
had taken into the star stained sky.
Jake felt an ache he thought he'd
long since left behind as Dillon's
sad song hit home.

~~~
Seems we've spent a lifetime now on this sad highway ...
never knowing where these white lines will lead us to.
The traveling takes it toll, distance wears on one's soul,
still I've always known, in the end all my roads lead back to you.
All I ever wanted was to love you ...all I ever needed ... I found in you.
I gave you my heart and soul ...God, it was just so easy to do.
I whispered in your sorrow's silence ... I shared all my secrets untold.
All I ever wanted was to hold you ... but baby you're hard to hold.
How many love songs can I sing for you ... how many poems can I write.
How many times will we have to try ... before we finally get it right.
I would give you all my falling stars, my moon of blue, morn's sun of gold.
All I ever wanted was to hold you ... but baby you're hard to hold.
Now your gone again ... and I'm left alone with this pain.
I'm becoming lost in this silence ... and I'm calling out your name.
See these tears I'm crying ... for you, darlin ... I'll die trying ...
baby I'm not lying ... I'm gonna love you when I'm old ...
All I ever wanted was to hold you ... but baby you're damn hard to hold.
All I ever wanted was to hold you ... but baby your just so hard to hold.
not going to say much... you're off the hook...and you did good.... damn good..
thank you.
OK...couldn't resist coming back... The scene you write here..resonantes of scenes I have lived out in so many ways... the "what now" after a death and how a family is torn by their own private dealings with it... too real JM... too real.. You did better than good... far better.....
You are the ONE!  Awesome JM.  I am so glad you got challenged into this.
He wanted to comfort both his
sisters, but one look at Iambe's
shoulders stiffening as he approached
her, told that she wasn't about to stay
fragile for long, her hard shell facade
was now back in place
and I can't copy the entire ending so just know that was AWESOME poetgator, AWESOME!
Oh good.  I don't have to write any more at all, ever again.  JM is back in the saddle...and I'm putting my pens away.  Notebooks, too.  I'm just going to sit here and read...
Janet,
I enjoy your writing. You did capture much depth regarding family and death. I liked this a great deal. Quite talented, you are.
There are so many directions you can go, all of you can keep writing and we would not tire of it.
Hugs, Pat
Whether blackmailed or inspired, I'm glad you picked up that pen and WROTE! LOL
It never ceases to amaze me how the bunch of you have encouraged and inspired each other in creating and sharing a unique and fascinating family... Each of you work separately (or so I'm supposing *S*) and yet your works blend like a choir at Christmas... with one featured soloist after another weaving melodies and harmonies that leave the listener awed and humbled.
You write a book that the reader can't put down... even if chapters are read out of sequence.
This is excellent, JM... and I thoroughly enjoyed. *S*
Cpat...the floral odor of daisies is making me hallucinate...did you say something?
Suthern...independently, but with a lot of archival reading to get them all to breathe...you know the old saying...you can't choose your relatives, but you sure can pick your poets...
I've missed the inspiration that led up to this point, but I do know one thing, this stands entirely on its own. It is though I am standing there watching this scene unfold and captured up in the imagery....lovely
Ya done good JM, so the blackmail thing works, huh?
You bring an element of heart to this series and Jake, that I like.  Hell, it even seems to soften Iambe a bit.
Great job...now go have some tea!
wow. i cant even tell you all how amazing it is to see all the lambe series. i would say to write a book, as every one i read is that good, but i think that would just take all the mystery away. but lemme tell ya, all of you who have done "lambe" should be writers. from a person who goes through about two to three 700 page books a week, you have what it takes.but thats just my thoughts
