Sometimes when family members die, "Sorry for your loss" may not apply as the person left behind may be feeling anything but sorry for the loss.  For one reason or another the relationship with a parent or sibling was strained and unreconcilable.  However, no matter how bad it was there will always be a strange feeling of "bittersweet love" as they were still part of our "family", even if not the way we wished it to be.

There were no tears,

should there have been?
All that resided within her
was a dark, hollow void.
She couldn’t put her
finger on it to even name it.
Was it that she was grieving
what could or should have been?

It all felt so ethereal
more like standing back
admiring a long overdue
but now finished project.
That sense of satisfaction
you get when fitting
in that final piece
to complete
a huge jigsaw puzzle.

Usually within her resided
such love and warmth
but not today.
She felt as cold as ice.
She had never once
told him that she loved him.
She had tried to
but couldn't.

The residual of the day was
just overwhelming relief.
How sad that was all there was.
Relief. No tears.
It was finally over.
Silently she whispered,
“I loved you Dad,
did you ever love me?”

(big hugggssssss) Oh Sharon, this is so very heartaching, sweet friend, my heart goes out to all the children of the world who feel neglected and can't help but wonder what their parents think of them as they need all the love and attention they deserve and thinking of a father who doesn't think of his child breaks my heart! (sad sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, this is very heartfelt, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sharon, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

some turn the "bitter" into something positive that they can use to overcome and in doing so set an example for others trying to rise above.....

Ive seen you turn bitter in to better....and learned from your example. TY for that.

Ahh Mysteria, you reflect these feelings so well. You are veery heartwarming. I would burst into tears if anyone I knew died, even if I can't stand them. But I know so many people who did not cry.

Never be normal!

Whew! I need a moment to compose myself...
I don't know if this was a personal experience for you or not, but my heart is bleeding at this moment.

This was certainly expressed well...almost too well!--I really felt this one!

I thank you all for your comments and yes this is about my Dad who died on the 11th of December but I did not find out until yesterday.  I am now faced with managing his affairs and wishes after more years than I care to say that we had not spoken. I feel sorry for what he missed in not knowing the love I feel from my wonderful family.

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Sharon, I'm so sorry that I took this poem the wrong way, I thought of this at first as the vision of a boy or girl who is being neglected by their dad! (wipes tears) But I know with all my heart your dad loves you so much and always will, as we all send angel hugs out to you and your whole family! God Bless You All, I hope you can forgive me!

Love,
Noah Eaton

You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.  To say I understand and appreciate what you wrote just doesn't seem to do justice, yet I've had these mixed feelings about when my own father died 26 years ago.  You've written a very compelling and heartfelt piece here.  Hugs.

I've read many wonderful poems from your pen... but this one leaves the hairs on my arms standing upright and chills running down my spine... it's incredible.
And there are times when tears fall as much for what should have been as for what was... mine fall now for you.

Oh this is most heartwrenching, so sad, so real. I am thinking you touched many people with this write.  Those that have shared it, and those you just shared it with.

I know it touched me.
