Softness was unknown
As they built their happy home,
Hearth of reclaimed bricks
Fire made from foundling sticks,
Warmth of their spirit
Heats the chill so they bare it,
They cling to living
In the far unforgiving.
Their happiness reigned,
And each year a little gained,
They were of glad heart,
But there were times when apart,
He’d be out hunting,
She’d be at the stove canning
While making dinner;
They made ready for winter.
He had been long gone
When returning by wagon,
Gone was the old mule
A strong young horse now did pull,
Under the canvas
A surprise she’d never guess,
Dreamed from long ago
Was a standup piano,
When young she would play
A dream that had slipped away.
They struggled it down,
Carefully across the ground,
And then in the door
Over the creaking wood floor
Near the one window
In the sunshine not shadow.
So again she’d play
After their breakfast each day,
He would hear the sound
As he went to work the ground.
Toiling all the day
Returned home hearing her play.
Harvest turned winter
And spring leads to the summer
As years quickly go,
Music from the piano
Lightened many days
Helped them along the harsh ways
As they built their happy home.

Bravissimo, professoro! Bravissimo!

I absolutely love this! The rhyme, the reason, the time, the season!
