I was fourteen years of age
On the day that Elvis died
I watched the mass hysteria
And saw so many people cry

Still too young to appreciate
The man they called 'The King'
But I knew that he was special
So much joy did his music bring

More popular now in death
But his memory still lives on
His voice as smooth as velvet
Throughout each and every song

You loved so many tender
And helped us make it through the night
But you will never be forgotten
Of you, we'll never lose sight

Today they'll mourn at Graceland
And fondly remember all those years
Sheer devotion lays behind
Their sadness and their tears

Your flame has been extinguished
But your memory burns so bright
A legend lives on eternally
As we follow your guiding light

* * * *

Some of you may think I'm a day early
posting this but it is actually Friday
16th here in Australia as we are a
day ahead.

I am in motion
I am blue
Love is an ocean
I'm anchored in you

My second daughter was born a couple of months after we lost "The King"...I figured she would never know his music...

I'm so glad I was wrong...

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Sue, this is sooooooo beautiful, I love the King and his music and what it did for us all even though I didn't grow up in his era and am actually preparing my tribute too tomorrow on his 25th anniversary of his passing! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, I too not only mourn of what we lost with Graceland but also celebrate the gift he brought us all, Long Live the King, for his throne is indisputable, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sue, thank you for sharing!

May love and light alwyas shine upon you!

Love,

I was in Pensacola with a bunch of friends... we'd rented a house near the beach and were trying to soak up enough sun to forget classes started soon. *S* There wasn't a TV or radio in the house... but by chance, we'd loaded into the car for a pilgrimage to Jitney Jungle for groceries. An Elvis song was playing as we started out... and was followed by another Elvis song. Back then, the "three in a row" by the same artist was rare... so when the third Elvis song started, I blurted out "He's dead." And sure enough, we heard the announcement moments later.

This is a wonderful remembrance, Sue... I liked it very much. *S*

Thanks for the poem and the memory.
Great picture. He is still a pretty picture to gaze upon. What a tragic end, did you see the interview of Pricilla?

He will always be remembered!

My children were very young, and I was separated from my husband, whom I later divorced.  I remember I was cooking when the radio told his untimely death.  I cried.  I was heart sick, as I had grown up listening to his albums, and watching his music.  My husband, now, meet him and partied with him once night while in service.  He was indeed a good man, who cared for others.
He will never truly die, for his memory is in the heart of so many!!!.   Thank you for the poem.

a very well written tribute - makes me think back to a different time when Elvis was singing through that 45 record player as we all sat on the porch listening to music our parent knew was corrupting us - thanks Sue!!! Paul

This is great. And as my Grandmother would say..."he's a pretty man"..;-)
I loved Elvis and I shed tears over him too!
Those were my days and my biggest thrill was
when I got to see him 'move those hips'.
My Mom wouldn't let me watch him on tv because of those movements! ;-)

Thanks for posting this.
