Fill 'Er Up
By: Noah Eaton
7/8/02

Cruising down Interstate 55, down the county line
All tied up in daydreams, twenty questions and tomorrows sights
That long game of I Spy made me feel half-crucified
Not to mention all the license plates of states I couldn't find
Otherwise I'm feeling just fine

I lose against my sisters every time in that Quiet Game
Yet these are the days you just have to rise and celebrate
Like The Boss says, we're all born to run
So you've got to be chasing down the sun

So fill 'er up
Fill 'er up
Fill her 'up

Stopped in at the Cracker Barrel Saturday morning
Browsing around that country store before we sat down to eat
Sitting out on the rocking chairs on the patio
Playing around with the Slinky, jumble checkers and yo-yo
Making funny faces with that Wooly Willy as we played with that Whee-lo

Just for fun, we threw around the Balsa Glider
Nurtured that Cheerful Chimp and strummed the guitar of Roy Rogers
Played tea party with Raggedy Ann and Andy
Settling for one small game of them their Tiddley-Winks

Sat down for dinner for some fresh cajun catfish
Grilled with tasty steak fries, pinto beans, and turnips
Celebrating another victory in pegs over a glass of sorghum molasses
Every now and then you've go to try Uncle Herschel's favorite
Take the time and enjoy life's unique ingredients

So fill 'er up
Fill 'er up
Fill 'er up

So maybe I can't drive 55 like Sammy Hager
But I can roar like Steppenwolf, that's for sure
Are you gonna go my way for some downhome goodness?
Get out the map and let's point our finger upon our destination

Out here in the free world we can be anything
Makes no difference to be nothing or everything
Let your life take command in scenic route mode and speed
You can be the king or queen, if you know what I mean
So saddle up partner, we're in cruise control
The summer is passing so soon, so we gotta roll

So fill 'er up
Fill 'er up
Fill 'er up

You really got me in the mood for travel, Noah...
It sounds like you had a wonderful time and turned it into a fantastic poem.

Oh yeah!  The beat goes on!  Jack K would have been proud.

Very nicely done Noah, very nicely done indeed.

do you know the laugh of knowing?
it is deeply felt, also
and a joy to let out!

toasting to days of riding backwards
in the rumbleseat of a station wagon
on the way
to anywhere

i admire your versatility
and your great sense of humor, Noah,

Noah, I read this one earlier, and I didn't quite know what to say, still don't, but I wanted to let you know that it touched me...and after i read it, I did fill er up and I went on a drive to see an old friend...and I"m glad I did.
