Thor is no more.
No, I do not mean
the Norse god of War.
or the god of Thunder.
But the great adventurer
who sailed the seas
to prove his theories
of how the ancients
may have traveled
across the mighty seas.
No, he wasn't the Thor
who wielded the hammer
called Mjollnir.
This Thor rode the waves
on Kon Tiki and Ra.
Sail away Thor,
to the land of
Forevermore,
and know that you
will be remembered
as a magnificent
modern day hero.
Thor,
Norwegian adventurer,
Man of the Seas.

Thor Hyerdahl sailed peacefully away to his final port of call today, April 18, 2002.

Hi Magnus. Thanks for reading and commenting. Thor Hyerdahl's adventures were astounding, and I remember reading the Kon Tiki and Ra stories many years ago, and marveling at one man's incredible bravery and determination. And he continued to research and share his knowledge, right up to the end.

Wonderful tribute, Midnitesun.  I remember way back reading about Thor and the story had a picture of him on the raft.  I'll never forget that, for some reason it's stuck with me all these years.  Thanks for sharing this.

Lone wolf, so nice to have a visit from you! Yes, I read his adventure stories, and was encouraged by his determination to follow his dreams.

Paladin, so nice to see you here again. Yes, Thor sails now with the other great ones.

Nancy, thanks! Thor really was a 'real life' giant.

Noah, thank you. I can't let the passing of a great adventurer go without a comment.

Kacy,
You know how to put a smile on my face. I heard this on the news in my office today and immediately thought of you writing a poem in his honor. I'm so thrilled you didn't let me down. And you forgot RaII. So would that make his final voyage RaIII? What an incredible man. I can't believe his courage and genuine interest in history. I will always treasure his memory and how he has inspired me. Travel in small vessels on large bodies of water strike me with sheer terror, but through him I traveled there anyway. Thank you so much Kacy for this tribute. Bravo!!!

It's never too late to have a good childhood! Woohoo!

Larry, you make me and want to give you a big    I'm glad I didn't disappoint. Yes, I knew about Ra2,but couldn't get that far into this one today. Your Ra finale thought is funny, I'll bet he would have enjoyed that bit of humor. Yes, he was an amazing man, and I'm sorry most teenagers today are asking Thor who? It's a good time for some positive history lessons. Hope the teachers 'round the globe take a moment to discuss his contributions, and honor a great adventurer and world citizen. God knows they could sure use more examples like him in the media.
