The Figure Skater

As rushes bending
we attend
the hush beginning,
a face
upturned into a light whose beam illumines
hope, dreams. Gone are mornings
leadened by the want of sleep;
by puddled walks and guttered streets
that overflow and form a lake
of asphalt
capped with waves of paint;
the hollow echo of a door
closing heavily. Still more
darkness; yet to greet,
the loud, enthusiastic lack
as circuit breakers
clack,
clack,
clack
their rote resistance to the art.
And yet, despite all this, tonight
the ice,
the ice,
the ice evokes a song of balance,
a look of flight to earth come down,
and rushes bending
toward a swan.

If I were to make a guess, I would say this is in honor of the Olympians who have proven their merit, time and again...

well done Sir...very well done indeed...

and the Gold goes to you...

Wonderful!  Especially the last few lines. All along, I was thinking of Sarah Hughes...especially the upturned face with the light bouncing off. You may not have used those exact words...but I could see Sarah's face when I read the lines about the 'upturned face.'

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
