state of confusion

At Sea Lane

One dark, wintry day long ago,
at Sea Lane we did gather,
storms cooking just offshore,
four girls to their necks in lather.

Sense had no part in our scheme,
our eyes were on the incoming tide,
not a soul stood on cliff or dune,
we were foolish beyond pride.

A southerly rip towed us out to sea,
land’s edge quickly slipped away,
we choked on sea foam and swells,
sea and sky were blurs of gray.

One of us shouted out the rules
for escaping an undertow,
we began to swim sideways,
although our passage was slow.

Karen, Suzanne and I lurched onto land
before a set of waves arrived,
but Skye was sucked back into the ebb
it was a miracle we survived!

Skye finally made it to the shoals,
she reached and we grabbed her hands,
exhausted all, we laid on the beach,
counting blessings in the sand.

always a fan of anything involving the sea. Interesting format, flows a little like an incoming tide. Good read.J

Corinne~
I hear it can be very, very frightening to be caught in a riptide~
And all too often, fatal~

Thank goodness ... you all survived it~
Doesn't it give you re-lived goosebumps to recall it ?

Well written, as always~

our own foolish actions survived... nice metaphor for so many things we do in our lives...and how the tides of life can also threaten us... nicely done..a pleasure to read.

I love reading the personal touches you give your work, Corinne, they bring the reader right into it in such a wonderful way. Never stop!

Geez, Cor, I have been there too, very scary feeling, good thing it was a long time ago for you, or sigh, I would have had to fuss in relief...very gentle smile...p.s. glad you made it, hon

Corinne, You have told this story so well it made me shiver.  So glad you all made it back to shore.
Love the way you recall images and thoughts.  Enjoyed.  ~Nancy~

Thank you all for commenting!

yes, this did happen a long time ago, when I was a teenager. I grew up at the beach, and you tend to get overconfident when you spend your life in the ocean. Think you can swim in any kind of conditions.

It was a scary thing, even stranger is that of the four of us, Skye was the only one to die young. She died when she was 21. I've tried several times to write about that, but so far, it just won't come.

Thanks again!

Corinne, great write, and suspensful too.  Interesting statement in your last reply. I sometimes think there are connections in life to the future. Sort of warning... ok i'm a little strange.   Seems maybe you do to.

A tender write, and one I can relate to all to well. And about that Skye, you already wrote a piece of her heart into this poem, and I felt somehow as if she touched my hand and reached out to help me today, as I am nearly drowning in sorrow. Thank you.
