The Weaver

With careful patience, she selects
Cane to split for basketry.
She weaves her dreams into the frame
And makes designs of Cherokee.

From walnuts, bloodroot, butternut,
Dyes she makes will help create
And show the mastery she has
In clever hands, that weave and plait.

So many ways they're utilized.
Some for storing beans and corn
And some, to carry from the fields,
The varied crops as they are shorn.

This talent passed down through the years,
Is still put to good use today.
Materials are more plentiful,
But some still work in the old way.

They treasure vestiges that time
Has not erased from out their lore
And as they teach young girls to weave,
They only treasure them the more!

ah nicely described and told... the old skills and the teaching of them do much to help preserve a heritage and help us to remember the way things were...

I enjoyed

Look at this weave!  This one touched me in so many ways, I shall just have to add it to my "special pieces" nook in the library...
