Opportunity
Virginia Salter

opportunity was sitting out on the front stoop
at least that’s who he said he was
I had a hard time recognizing him
what with those strange clothes
the chains, the bell and baubles
hanging about him from many places

how was I to know such things could come in such strange packages

to me, those things always said, “danger, beware”
how could I trust someone with that kind of hair
and even though his voice was soft spoken
and even though he held out a token
how could I believe such a thing possible
such extraordinary in color and flavor

how could I know he had something to savor

the two most important books I’ve ever read
were quite plain on the outside, yet inside they fed
the Holy Bible, all covered in black,
yet inside for beauty and wisdom was nary a lack
“Tuesdays With Morrie” a book about dying
teaches to live, it’s true I’m not lying
so plain are these books on their covers it’s true

but reach deep inside, they’ll edify you

so how could I know that a cover gregarious
could be the opposite, in any way, of nefarious

this is all contrived, there is a message here, but be careful to get the right one...I'm not suggesting anyone run off with the first gregarious being/offer they get

Very insightful, Virginia, and much wisdom here;  however, as you know, all books have more than one story -- there are deeper levels just beyond the initial deep ones, and just when we think we've figured something out, we learn, to our surprise, how little we really know, afterall...  Thanks for the thoughts.
