She was with us in the battles
In trenches, foxholes and planes
In desert heat and forest sweat
In delta's torrential rains

The banner of our freedom
Red, the symbol for those who died
Carried home within a box
She was draped from side to side

Blue symbolizes our justice for all
Even those who cast her to flame
And those who deride her cause
And hide from her in shame

White is for the purity of ideals
Virtue claimed by democracy creed
Arms open to all mankind
To those humble and in need

Today we humbly honor 'old glory'
The symbol of our fight to be free
Stand up, citizens of this land
Hand over heart for your liberty

White - purity and serenity
Red - blood of those who died for freedom
Blue - freedom and justice

The Continental flag remained as the unofficial national flag until the Continental Congress adopted a Resolution establishing the thirteen star-and-stripe U.S. National Flag on June 14, 1777.

George Washington later characterized the color scheme and design of the Flag as being symbolic of America itself. The white stripes represent the purity and serenity of the nation, while the red stripes represent the blood spilled by Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. The white stars symbolize the purity, liberty, and freedom within the nation. The royal blue field stands for freedom and justice.
