Earth Guide

I unfolded it,
then used it
until it was creased and yellow,
this map of mine.

I would follow the blue
of the river
to the sea,
until sand wore away the words.

I saw the roll of mountains
on the seat beside me,
and though I was almost out of gas,
I went there on a back-road
made of pine needles.

I can still smell, pungent
and real as a child’s Christmas,
the clean air of a redwood grove.
It is there, top left,
where the sun is staked in strands of light
to the ground fern’s grace.

Why would this opening earth guide,
so withered and wrinkled
from my careless hand,
be so important?

Because it tells me
that I have been.

In the dew of little things,
the heart finds its morning
and is refreshed.
(ee cummings)

Martie, the pine needles did it...and I've some memories that will have to be put down, tomorrow....

of the blue skies and pine-needle recalls, so pungent are the pine-points of memory...

Martie~
Well ... I would hope that someday I could follow a map that is written on the plains of your heart.

This is just endearing, sweet poet.
Thank you.

Martie,

This is what I've beem trying to teach you all along, my friend.  This is a wonderful poem, clearly one of your best, in my opinion.  You've done well and get and "A" on this one.    "Teacherly hugs"

Wonderful, Martie.  For some reason, though, it caused me to be even more concerned that I need to get out and spend my half-hour for the day doing yard work.  I think I'd better read it again when I'm not feeling guilty.

An interesting coincidence. I wrote a poem of a map once, and an unfolding of another kind. It's smothered in an archive too. http://piptalk.com/pip/Forum82/HTML/000105.html
