Risen forth from Roman lands and ashen skies
Merovingians mirrored western Europe’s empire decline
From barbarian peoples to unite common threads
Soon princely crowns planted on warrior heads
Weakened by armed conflict, terror and strife
Charles Martel chose the time as ripe
A new line was formed to become immortal on that day
For to Pepin, then Carolus Magnus, known as Charlemagne
Savior of papal virtue, protector of Rome
From Aix-la-Chapelle his royal home
Conqueror of the Lombards, Saxons and Bavaria
Also passed his hand over Hungary and Austria
Then the Moors from Spain did bow
Before the Holy Roman Emperor’s Crown
Which pope Leo on Christmas day
Anointed as such in this way
And kneeling before the great and Frankish one
Did what no other pope has ever done
And in doing so, created Empire
Which still today ignites these nations’ desire
His line birthed monarchy and imperials, Louis and Germans
All owe heraldry and greatest respect to him
By the sword and the cross he conquered best
And with his sword and cross he lays now at rest
