My Friend, Martie

Timidly,
I held my hand out
to you
in friendship.

You welcomed me
like someone
you'd always known.

With you kindness
and
lack of pretense,
I immediately felt
comfortable.

I had read your poetry
filled
with the imagery
of
sunny days,
Pacific shores,
children laughing
and
found in you
a
kind a gentle spirit,
moving.

There's a sweetness,
almost childlike in its innocence,
that is a part of you.

So accepting you were
of
my many faults
and foolishness.

It didn't seem to matter.

My friendship,
this hand
that you could touch,
was all
that was important.
