Why does what I write have to be real?
Can’t it just be a means to heal?
Maybe it’s the truth or just my dreams
Perhaps nothing is as it seems

Who’s to question my words?
Maybe I’m just trying to be heard
Am I not allowed to hope and pray?
Trying to make it through another day

I admit I write from the heart
Always thought that was the place to start
But what resides deep down inside
On these pages I’ll never confide

Too easy for some to misunderstand
The meaning behind the words in my hand
I’ll continue to write my best
And to heck with all the rest

No one is here to be analyzed
We don’t need to be criticized
For we have done nothing wrong
Except tried to sing our heart’s sad song

The line between fiction and reality
Can be perceived to be thin you see
When in truth they’re miles between
What is read and what we mean

Thanks for listening to me vent
I appreciate the time you’ve lent
Reading my thoughts here today
For now that's all I have to say

Poetry should surprise by fine excess...it should strike the reader as a wording of his own highest thoughts and appear almost a remembrance. -J.Keats

I shall confess to believing that many of the things I've read are true. . . only to find out there they're not. . . and feeling silly. . .

I guess that's one of the marks of a good writer. . . when they can make you believe that what they've written is actually from their lives. . .

Excellent poem. . .

Jennifer, wonderful poem. I tend to believe everything I read, mainly because what I write is almost always from my heart and therefore true. I enjoy all of your words, regardless of the topic. Kate

Somethings are true, somethings are not. Somethings are the dreams that goes to pot.
Enjoyed the thoughts.

I believe this. (No, really.) This is something I've wondered as well, Jennifer. Great poetic vent.

What you write is very true. Thank you for sharing what others have thought and didn't know how to put in words.

for what it's worth...i never take a poem to be autobiographical...we are writers...and we have vivid imaginations! if someone really wants to know what's true, they can always ask

enjoyed the message

Loved the poem. Although I agree with the sentiments, I think it's nice when you write a fictional piece well enough and it is believed by all.

I tend to write from my own experience, though usually with a word or two of fiction. I tend to take what others have written...literally and I, too, have sometimes felt silly later. Enjoyed this!

Well done poem and message. I tend to be a bit selfish and write for me! I rarely write for just the reader really, and assume that the only audience I get is myself (and sometimes it is - lol . As long as you write Lone Wolf, it doesn't matter if it is true or not, nor do the comments change any of the feelings that came from your muse, and soul. Pen on! Great poem.

This is so good, Lone Wolf. I can relate to every line. I think too many times people think they can get to know the poet by the verses they write. People who think that miss a big part of the puzzle. Sometimes the fun in poetry is that you can write about things you've never done, people you've never met and places you've never been. Anyway, Awesome piece.
