You ask me who I am
as if you haven't got a clue.
I'm the one who took my heart
and offered it to you.

I'm the one...
who smiles and fights the tears
as you speak of your dreams
and how they'll take you far from here.

I'm the one...
Who holds you close when the time is right,
but knowing your restless ways,
careful not to ever hold you tight.

Now you dare...
to ask me who I think I am.
I'm the one who took your frigid heart
and taught it to love again.

I'm the one...
that you cling to each night
and whisper in my ear
that I make everything alright.

I'm the one...
who woke this morning just to find
the bed cold, your bags packed
and leavin' on your mind.

I'm the one...
willing to put my pride away,
laying it all on the line
and begging you to stay.

I don't know how...
you can ask the things you do.
I'm the one
who is still in love with you.

so sad, yet I understand every word you write, once you love someone you just can't turn your feelings off.

to be with you...
I've tried to hide my passion,
but it's just no use...
piece by piece I lose it
when you walk into the room...

Wonderful, Tennessee Angel. The 4th stanza is my favorite!

JLR -- What pride, indeed! Thank you so much for reading.

Rosebud -- No, feelings don't shut off so easy..at times that's a blessing and a curse.

Dee -- That is truly the greatest compliment! Thanks a bunch for reading.

snowpants -- Ah, my poetic buddy! Thank you so much. Your replies mean a great deal to me.

Sven -- I must admit..I kinda sang this one into existence myself. Thank you dear friend.

Just a woman -- I kinda liked that one too. I call it the 'attitude stanza'.

Sunshine -- Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! Many times you have touched my heart with your work.

'Deer -- I always know I've written something half way decent if I see a reply from you. Thanks a bunch for reading and responding.

I agree- wonderfully expressed emotions.
Love how you point out what you did ( and still do) to help this person and expect nothing from them in return but for them to love you back.
....Awesome write...

Written as only a Tennessee Angel could write it; this read like a song.

and the sun drips honey."
