Flight of Dragon Quest
Karen Torbiak
2000

My friend come share my fantasy and soar with me
to yonder rock of majestic mountain peak
where magic still lives for us to see
with bold heart the dragon we would seek

Take my hand my friend and I will lead
to fantasy’s world filled with mysteries
where flight over mountains on our mystical steed
will give us better knowledge of this world’s histories

Let us find the caves there hidden still
where eyes that have seen a thousand lifetimes glitter
there rests the dragon once they’ve had their fill
of knowledge from man that has left them bitter

Together let us seek the magic of life from the wise
for they have flown the lengths of all these lands
where they have seen how man has fallen from his lies
from shore to shore they’ve watched us travel over sands

There, high up is a ledge from which the creature flies
and here a path well trod to take us there
as we climb high we know these creatures own the skies
so with careful steps we approach the cave his lair

We ask a boon of thee oh Dragon of mystic might
it is known to us that to you man is no friend
but bold we come to you to ask that we share dragon flight
and then from mountain's magic we will descend

The dragon’s eyes took light to pierce our very souls
with snake like head he trapped us in his lair
he grinned at us with teeth the size of sharpened polls
with opened mouths we froze and could only stare

To our amazement he spoke with human voice
“True friends your hearts reveal come to me to seek
the flight of dragon forgotten by man by choice
so this gift I give to bold friends with whom I speak”

With no other word he went to ledge this wondrous beast
his winds laid back as eagles would against his side
the floor around him was littered with bones of recent feast
there was room for two between the rows of spikes placed so we would not slide

We mounted the dragon and placed ourselves upon his back
with softest step he moved toward the light
where much to our surprise saw his color was deepest black
then spread his wings with ease soared off the cliff in flight

He beat his wings with power to take us high
above the mountains and through the clouds we did go
then straight ahead over earth and ocean did we fly
holding tight this flight of dragon was not slow

Around the earth he took us in space of day
seeing war and strife by man everywhere we went
when flight was done we begged that we could stay
with sadness in his eyes he said we were of earth so away we were sent

Now though we dare not speak of this to man
our hearts were joined as friends on Dragon Quest
we whisper of the thrill of flight when ever we can
and though questioned where we were none would ever guess

A tale well told my friend. . .

Startime,
Well done, and very well written. Dragons still roar.
