This season of cool rains
with grey winter fading
and spring waiting anxiously
on the doorstep,
I think of you.
I remember the dense shade
of sheltering oak trees in the park
where we laid out picnics long ago.

How we wrestled with love
among the tall wet grasses,
teasing each other into easy submission.
You must have known even then
how much I wanted you!

Young we were, and green as grass
but full of new grown desire.
You claimed me with your gentle touch,
your tenderness made me tremble.
You were no poet, yet your eyes
smiled sonnets in the summer sun,
dropped them like kisses
everywhere your loving gaze
fell on my face, my arms, my belly...
I keep them still,
each one cherished in myheart.

But we grew up, and grew apart
as summer stumbled into fall.
We each found a different path
and though I longed for you
to hold me close, bid me stay,
you just turned and walked away.

Season followed after season
down all the years until today.
Our paths have crossed
and crossed again, sometimes
we stop to talk and touch,
sometimes we just move past.
But each time I have yearned for more,
to hold you close and not let go,
to walk the path together.
And this season of cold rains,
when memories are my only warmth,
I cannot help but think of you.
I think of you, and smile.

Beki,
I can sooo relate to this. You describe a failed relationship perfectly.

Thank you kethry, though I don't know if I'd call it a failed relationship so much as a lost one. We are still in touch through email though time and circumstances have kept us apart for over 20 years   I emailed him this poem a couple days ago and he loved it.

Nan, thanks, and hello...have been posting here again for a few weeks but my posts get buried so fast, this is first I have seen you comment this go 'round, glad you caught this one! Hope all is well with you
