Night of the Barking Dog

Last night, our neighbor's dog began
To bark as only Great Danes can.
I listened to him and I knew,
I wouldn't sleep till he was through!
He was excited, I could tell.
Perhaps a little mad as well.
The barks increased in speed and tone
And I supposed he was alone!

I went and opened up the door
And hollered at his throaty roar.
I doubt he even heard my yell,
So I thought I'd read a spell.
An hour passed; my mood was sour.
Where were his owners at this hour?
When two a.m. had come and gone,
I struggled with yawn, after yawn
And yet I couldn't tune him out.
Still sounding strong, there was no doubt,
That he could bark the night away
And hold the wildlife world at bay!

He finally quit at half-past-four!
Though arms of sleep, I did implore,
There was no hope I'd close my eyes
And in two hours, I must rise!
I drew the drapes and I could see,
He was stretched out, so peacefully
And sound asleep. It isn't right!
But I'll have ear-plugs, by tonight!

BettyLou~
I'm just chuckling more than you could imagine at this~

Happened to me once ... and when I went to 'nicely' discuss it with the neighbors the next day ... they got just so angry with me.  So, I simply recorded the dog barking next time they weren't there (all night !) and then called them at 3:45 a.m. and let them listen to their OWN dog barking loudly !
To their (coerced) credit ... they finally apologized to the entire neighborhood !

I LOVE dogs AND responsible owners~

Dear Marge:  What a clever thing to do!  I couldn't think of anything but killing him!
Of course, I would never do anything so drastic as I do love all animals, but he drove me wild!

Love

Yes this can be maddening.  We live out in the country so aren't too close to the neighbors but our own dog did that to us once.  He barked until he lost his voice.  Love, Joyce

Joyce:  We live in the country also and everyone out here has at least 2 dogs.  One family has 6.  Usually they are well-behaved but this one dog takes a notion to bark all night, once in awhile.  He has such a big bark, you can't escape! Thanks.

Ben:  Yes I do know, but I can't do anything about it.  Couldn't even stop a barking dog!

Claire:  Thanks for commenting on this poem. I thought it was funny too, a couple of days later!  He's been very quiet since I wrote this, so maybe he felt the vibes I sent his way!

Nice title...glad the dog decided to let you get some sleep...its not the dogs fault...the owners need to tell the dog to stop barking late at night...allright dog, only bark late at night when someones breaking into the house...James

James Michael:  Thanks for reading and enjoyed your comments.  The dog has been completely silent since that night, so maybe he scared off something dire? It would be wonderful if they'd only bark when it was an emergency, wouldn't it!

Nan:  You're right and I still wonder where the owners were! Must have been an all night party someplace!
