In the end we seek the same
An end to violent death
You see it your way I see it mine
With each and every breath

We may be right we may be wrong
It's sometimes hard to tell
All I know is you should be sure
Before you load the shell

To take a life at any time
Is a shocking thing to do
To feel truly justified
Makes a Solomon of me and you

You may feel that Bush is right
To risk one sweet child's life
You may feel his judgement's strong
And you would wield the knife

But sometimes rage from afar
Is easier on our souls
If we don't have to see
The gore and bone and bullet holes

I hope you're right when you say
All this is justified
There can be no bringing back
Those who've bled and died

This is a more gracious write and actually touches more than the other type you write, because in the calmness your words make more sense.

I be me BUT who does me be?

Wow... such powerful words... such a strong message.  We should be strong and listen... and take heed.

Thank you so much for sharing this...

I agree Allan, war is a fearsome undertaking because of the loss of life that results on all sides, and not something to be taken lightly or unnecessarily. I believe that sometimes it is necessary, including this time if Saddam does not come clean, during this, yet again, another "last chance". I think that the loss of life that could occur if he doesn't, and isn't dealt with, would be far more catastrophic, in the long run, for all of us.

Thank you SPIRIT, cinnamongirl and Denise.

If I believed that the politicians were remotely telling the truth about the underlying reasons for this (and with politicians there are ALWAYS underlying reasons) I could just possibly go with it. In this case I believe the underlying reasons to be even more murky than ever. If you are going to kill and traumatise a whole nation I think you need to have an EXTREMELY clear reason and mandate. As civilised nations we are FAR from clear and united on this. I would say in the UK above 80% of the people are opposed to this coming war on Iraq. We look at Bush and we certainly do not see a man we can trust to lead us to kill ANYONE.

Perhaps we will recover from inflicting mass death and trauma on the innocents of Iraq. The soldiers, well I suppose we wont care so much for them.

But be sure people, be very very sure. Your consent WILL mean children playing innocent games right now in poverty-stricken Iraq will become pathetic mounds of bloody carcasses in the sand...

These are very compassionate words Allen and any one that has lost a loved one to war surely knows the pain of this and I do not wish to speak foolishly and bring any more pain to them...but many have lost loved ones to evil leaders also and I found some wise words I agree with in a book called "The Book of Family Traditions On The Art Of War" by Yagyu Munenori.
Some of his thoughts are, "It is bias to think that the art of war is just for killing people.  It is not to kill people, it is to kill evil...It is a a strategy to give life to many people by killing the evil of one person."...James

Allan,I have to say that this is your most eloquent offering.I have a temptation to make several hundred copies of this and post them around Pennsylvania. You would not believe how disheartened I am by the things I have been reading and hearing lately. The past couple of weeks I have been seeing polls that have taken on people's opinions as to declaring war on Iraq.I cannot believe my eyes that there is such a large majority who are in favor of bombs as opposed to patience and reasoning.I can't help but to wonder if those who are so "gung-ho" for resolution by war would be so if the major threat that we have and wield would be aimed at their own towns, their own homes and loved ones. How many would change their opinion,
do you think? I'm sure quite a lot.Keep writing,Allan.Bravo!

This is the best of yours I read so far! More gentle, but sharp to point. That's the way a poem should be. I'm moved by your poem.

I agree as Spirit said, this is a more gracious writing than some of yours.  There is nothing wrong with disagreeing with the way things are going.  Joyce
