Those Splendid Years

Our home was gracious, tall and wide
And with a central hall inside
That ran from front to back and there,
A broad veranda caught the air,
That even on the hottest day,
Would set the climbing vines a-sway.

There was a sleeping porch upstairs,
Where, after we had said our prayers,
We snuggled down in cots of white
And watched the stars be-deck the night,
Until we fell asleep, and when
The winter came, moved in again.

The furniture was dark and grand,
That grandma brought from Ireland.
The beveled windows caught the rays
With prismed light, on sunny days.
On down the yard, an arbor grew
That bore grapes, sweet as honey-dew.

They hung in clusters waiting for
Small, hungry mouths to come explore.
So many times, we children lay
Beneath the vines and there we'd play,
While sunlight through the leafy lace,
Cast greenish shadows on each face.

Yet, when it was our time to go,
We hurried off.How could we know,
That all of this would pass away.
There's no return to yesterday,
But in my heart and mind I see
Our homeplace as it used to be.
Memories of those splendid years
Bring poignant smiles and sometimes, tears!

Oh this makes me homesick.  Not that our farm home was grand, but it was filled with love and all those who have gone on.  Love, Joyce

Joyce:  This is actually where my mother spent her early years, but I heard about it so much, I decided to write it in the first person.  I felt like I had spent time there too, although, unfortunately only in pictures and dreams.

Marge:  Thanks a lot for your kind remarks. I lean pretty heavily to nostalgic memories myself!  I am writing here about the house my mother spent her first 7 years in. It always sounded to me like such a wonderful home, I imagined myself there.

you hit a home run with this one dear. what a lovely lilting flow it has as it takes us down memory lane.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Betty Lou, this is a glorious waft of memories....
how lucky you are, to be able to travel this path in time!
Wonderfully woven, in perfect rhyme and rhythm!

Lary:  Thanks.  This is actually my mother's first family home.  I never did see it except in pictures.  It looked great and I'm sure it was from the stories told.
