this is one of those nights
i miss the bar life
where feeling like an outsider
fit in with the crowd
i never thought i would miss
hiding in a glass
joking with the bartender
and pouring quarter after quarter
into a sleepless juke box
that would
line up and expose
lonely secrets
with song after song

clinking ice
in drinking glasses
rang out for attention
and always
(most always)
a girl i'd admire
maybe buy her a drink
around closing time
when eyes
would be soft, inviting,
hungry for company
or wandering, evasive,
running away
from sloppily slurred
shotgun words
fired in random patterns

victory or defeat
would hide in the darkness
as the bartender cried out
"last call, drink up"
mysteries ensued
and the juke box
cut short...
someone's
last
desperate
message

it was time to go home
and silently pray
for a timid knock
on an outsider's door

You know there are times when pubs and bars can be refuge to me at least being a student and also being irish lol but i do mourn the brain cells and grey matter that vanishes with each pint. Really enjoyed the poem well written.

"across the unfair divide
where black will never meet white
so read my token lips
like they never exist"

dear patrackmike

so vivid are your images
i seem to smell the stale air of cigarette smoke
mixing with beer that has been spilled on the bar somewhere
and the feeling of not wanting to end up
alone maybe just this one time.....
with last call knowing time is running out
will it or wont it be
very good write
any of us out here thats been to
this place before
knows this atmosphere all to well....

thanks again for sharing

Brad....Being part Irish myself, perhaps that's why I sometimes miss that atmosphere.  Actually, as I wrote this one, the bar I pictured was a small Irish Pub here in California.  I used to go there quite often.
Glad you enjoyed this one and thanks.*S*

mistyrose....you are quite vivid and knowing in your remarks as well.   Thank you.*S*
